Recycled HDPE Materials Questions
Which is the right material for my application – Recycled HDPE or Virgin HDPE?
HDPE is the most recycled plastic. It is durable and is perfect for use in most industrial plastic products. Our returning customers use our recycled HDPE sheet in their marine, agricultural, electric conduit and ductwork spacers, furniture, bikes and many other industrial products. Applications of high stress and high loads is where virgin HDPE sheet would be called for. We also make virgin HDPE plastic sheets.
Can I glue or paint it?
A strength of HDPE is that things don’t stick to it. We haven’t found a true bonding agent for this material. We would suggest contacting 3M and asking them what they recommend. Some of our customers flame treat the material so it takes paint, but we cannot attest to the success of that process.
How do I fasten it?
In most cases we suggest mechanically fastening it. HDPE has good screw retention. HDPE sheet can also be dovetailed or t-slotted to make conections.
How do you recycle HDPE?
Recycled material (old garbage cans, HDPE pipe, buckets, food containers, milk jugs etc.) are ground into granules. The granules are melted and extruded out of the machine onto a series of rollers. The sheet thickness is determined by the distance between rollers. A continuous sheet of recycled HDPE plastic exits the extruder onto rollers. After the recycled HDPE sheets have cooled, they are trimmed to the correct width and cut to correct length. Finished sheets are palletized and readied for shipping. We supply Recycled HDPE sheets in stock sizes and also fabricate parts and assemblies either by hand or on one of our CNC routers. See our slide show
Will the sheets hold up in sunlight?
Black sheets have a carbon pigment that slows the degradation of the material. The problem that may come from being out in the sun is the material may expand with temperature change and warp from one side of it being bigger than the other.
Will recycled HDPE break when cold?
Recycled HDPE is very good that way. Although it is hard to quantify.
Does it float?
Yes.
